White Noise

Easy to build & cheap white noise generator

This white noise generator is one of the first circuits I ever built. I use white noise all the time — it’s incredibly useful for creating wind sounds, weird FX, and random percussive textures — so I was really curious to try building my own.

I tested a few different circuits, and the one I liked the most was the design by René Schmitz. It was super easy to build and sounds great.

You can check the original project here : René Schmitz's White Noise

I highly recommend this project if you’re new to DIY synth building. It’s extremely useful, requires only a small number of components, and the parts you’ll need (resistors, capacitors, a transistor, and a TL072) are commonly used in many other DIY synth modules.

That means you can order them in larger quantities and reuse them in future projects.

Component List:
2x 10µF capacitor
1x 100µF capacitor
1x 10nF capacitor
1x 220nF capacitor
1x Jack socket
1x BC548 transistor
1x 4.7kΩ resistor
4x 100kΩ resistor
2x 2.2kΩ resistor
1x TL072
I didn’t change much compared to the original design. My version runs on a standard ±12V Eurorack power supply, and I used a TL072 op-amp instead of a TL082.

Big thanks to René Schmitz for sharing his designs and making them freely available to the DIY community. His website is full of DIY synth module schematics. The one I use the most is his ADSR module, which is also quite simple to build. Go check it out !
